These are three Books by Barbara Cleverly who is not as well-known as she should be. She has written several series about detectives, the longest and best known about Commander Joe Sandilands’ career at Scotland Yard in the twenties and the thirties. These three books are about an archaeologist in the twenties. Her name is Letitia Talbot.   Bright Hair About the Bone This is the second of Barbara Cleverly's books featuring Laetitia Talbot, but it is a prequel, set just over a year before the Tomb of Zeus. It is the 1920s, Laetitia is an archaeologist and although she has been to university, is finding it very difficult to find anyone who takes her seriously. This is very galling for someone of Letty's temperament. Finally she finds a place on a dig run by her godfather in Burgundy.           I have just read Robert Galbraith’s (aka J K Rowling) Troubled Blood . It is   very good but it is also very heavy. If you have a kindle, buy the electronic version. I didn’t because I was so incensed that the kindle copy was more expensive than the hard back. How can they justify that? Anyway, Troubled Blood is nine hundred and twenty-seven pages of superb detective story. The main characters are, as before, Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott, partners in a detective   agency based in Soho. The   agency is slightly more prosperous than before and they have a secretary and subcontractors to help with the increased work. However, it is not a happy time. Robin’s husband is making their divorce as gruelling and painful as possible and Strike’s Aunt Joan, who brought him up, is dying slowly and painfully from cancer. I love cookery books. I especially love the ones that tell you about the food and where it comes from. They have been a godsend during lockdown – better than a straight travel book because not only can you be transported to another place, but you can maintain the illusion a little longer by cooking, occupying your mind and your hands, filling your house with wonderful evocative aromas and then, after a period of intense expectation, eating a delicious dinner as a reward. Cyprus has wonderful food traditions. It is a blend of many influences – Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern and British, containing the best of each. Taverna by Georgina Hayden is a celebration of Cypriot food. It has taken me to delightful places this summer.
